Subject: AOL FAQ #1 June, 1994
Date: Mon, 30 May 1994 00:53:03 -0400 (EDT)
The AOL FAQ answers frequently asked questions (FAQs) about America Online. This is the manual that America Online never wrote. There are chapters devoted to mail, chat rooms, downloading, instant messages, message boards, and much more. Over 120 pages o
f information. There are also plenty of money-saving tips. The appendices list AOL keywords, smileys, and online abbreviations. There's even a QuickTime viewer built in. The FAQ will be updated monthly.
The FAQ was designed to be easy to use. You don't need anything to open it. Just doubleclick and it opens. There are color illustrations and easy, step-by-step instructions. You don't have to read the FAQ from start to finish.; it was designed for info s
urfing. You can quickly find the information you need using the Find command and the hypertext Table of Contents. Important information is marked with a Note! icon.
Here are a few of the things the FAQ explains how to do:
*compose mail in the free areas
*search the member directory in the free area
*read and write mail offline
*open GIFs and other graphics
*view GIFs as they're being downloaded
*decompress and install the software you download
*manage FlashMail and logs with the AOL Browser
*use AOL 2.1 to compress files
*solve connection and modem problems
*use Localities to overcome busy phone lines
*roll the AOL dice
*play sounds in chat rooms
*solve AOL 2.1's FlashSession problem
*keep an address book with your friends's email addresses
*manage FlashMail and logs with the AOL Browser
*troubleshoot connection and downloading problems
Checked for viruses with Disinfectant 3.5

Subject: Summary of responses to Ethernet-Appletalk query [*]
Enclosed, as promised, the replies I received to my query about
connecting an AppleTalk network of Macs to a campus-wide
Ethernet.
For less than eight Macs, it looks like it's worth buying individual
Ethernet adaptors (e.g. NuvoLink), but beyond that it's worth
investing in a router from Cayman or Shiva (if you can tolerate
the narrower bandwidth).
I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'll probably go the NuvoLink route.

In this package is a list of all the Mac and Picture archives that I
know of. In it is a directory listing (ls -CR), the internet routing
number and the date the archive was taken. I will be doing this once
a month sometime in the middle to the end. If you see any errors or
omissions then please send them to me at the address below. (I only
need the name and internet number).

Subject: report on methods for Backup to UNIX boxes across an ethernet
Dear Moderators: Please post this in the /report area. Thank you!
Here are the responses I received to the fiollowing question:

> can't take advantage of the server in a straightforward way --- or can I?
> In particular, I'd like to do unattended backups over the net (I am on\
> ethernet also) to the server, rather than having to buy a tape unit for

I did a review of the two NFS clients for Macintosh for Digital
News (now merged with Digital News and Review). You can read it in

In Info-Mac Digest V11 #191, Achim Voermanek asks about Peagasus. Here is a
posting from the author. At present, Pegasus for the Mac requires a Novell
Netware server. Apparently a future version will not.
